sea and lake. Awaji Island and Lake Biwa mirror each other’s contours. In Japanese myth, Nushima off Awaji rises first from the hush; Lake Biwa—the first lake—cradles time in layered depths.Land and sky, yin and yang, flux and repose, past and future— we traveled with the feeling that space and time stretched and folded. Photographs speak in wavelengths; scent gathers the grains of memory. Here in Kyoto—the in-between of Awaji and Biwa—these resonances loosen and are rewoven on the vertical and horizontal threads of water.
Nushima, part of Awaji Island
Mayu Tsuruta photographed on Nushima, a small island off Awaji. From quartz, a mineral that forms part of the island’s ancient geology,Sari extracted fragrance―a scent distilled from the memory of stone. On Nushima stands Kamidate-Kamiiwa,a sacred rock said in the Kojiki to mark the place where Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto stirred the sea with the Ame-no-Nuboko, the Heavenly Spear, and from the droplets that fell, the islands were born.At twilight―tasogare-doki―and again at the liminal hour between worlds, kawatare-doki,Mayu Tsuruta captured the surface of the sea. There, faintly, emerged he still-unformed visage of the divine age.In that sea, where the realm of the gods and the age of humans overlap, lie countless layers of time, one upon another.

Layers of time — present, past, and future A stratum of time beyond time A vast accumulation of memory. From chaos, the world is born.

The story of Earth’s birth and it‘s final end, the sea embracing all within its depths.

In the communion of heaven and earth, a new future is born — ever drawn upon the mirror of the sky.
Biwa-Lake
The photography took place in Hokubu, the northern reaches of the lake, where the air is suffused with a sense of the mysterious and the profound. The fragrance was extracted from freshwater pearls, born and nurtured in the lake’s waters. This is Lake Biwa―the ancient “淡海 (Awami no Umi)” whose origins trace back some four million years. Though the earth’s crust has shifted and transformed, its layers of memory remain, still inscribed within the waters. The shimmering hues are woven―light descending from the heavens as warp, the ripples of water as weft. A realm where life evolves, and continues to live.

The place where life is born, the place where life returns. Mingling, illuminated—born once more.

The memory of an ancient lake holds the traces of life and brings forth seed.

Through a cymatics device, the resonance of quartz from Nushima was transcribed onto the sacred water of Benzaiten from Chikubujima on Lake Biwa. Upon the still surface, patterns arose—as if witnessing the birth of being from the void, the silent emergence of form from nothingness.
